The grilling season is here and that means it’s time to break out the Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons.
We did just that this weekend, cracking open a new to us Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from RouteStock Cellars.
About RouteStock Cellars
RouteStock Cellars crafts wines from the signature varietals grown along the wine routes one travels when visiting the world’s most celebrated wine regions. These are classic grape varieties, best suited to each different wine-growing region and sourced from family-owned vineyards.
We found the nose to be, in a word, understated. After opening the bottle and letting it breathe for a good hour we got dark red fruit notes (plum, dark cherry) combined with a slight charcoal aroma. The subtleness had us intrigued.
On the palate the dark red fruit shined through–but not overly so–and nicely combined with cocoa flavors. A mid-palate Cabernet, the “Route 29” had very mellow tannins despite its young age. Winemaker Wayne Donaldson created a very drinkable, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon from prime Napa Valley vineyards that checked in on the slightly higher alcohol by volume side at 14.8%.
The ’08 is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Fanc, 4% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec with just over a third of the fruit sourced from the historic Rutherford AVA.
The highly aromatic nose showcases a variety of dark fruits with hints of leather, tobacco and violets. On the palate the wine delivers a rush of plum, currant, black cherry and anise, with a subtle oak structure and soft, approachable tannins. Vanilla and kirsch make an appearance in the finish, which is long and complete.
We purchased the wine for just over $20 at our local Whole Foods Market. A few Google searches bring up prices at or just below the $20 range.
A solid, young Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that one person in our party summed up best by calling it ‘dangerous.’
