This past weekend we made our way up to St. Helena to check out the first annual HALL Cabernet Cookoff. The event was a sort of Top Chef style cooking challenge pitting teams against one another in two categories: amateur and professional (with each team playing for a local charity).
Create a single dish for all attendees to enjoy that paired perfectly with the 2005 HALL Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
The concept was great, as was the execution. We took on the very difficult job of trying each of the dishes along with different vintages of both red and white HALL wines, each of which we enjoyed.

As expected there wasn’t a bad dish anywhere to be found. But, each of us did have to pick a winner from each category. Here’s how we wound up voting:
- Grilled Leg of Lamb Flatbread With Fava Bean Hummus (Professional)
- Grilled Pizza with Duck Sausage, Nettles, Ricotta (Professional)
- Chipotle and Chocolate Short Rib Tamales with Red Wine Sauce (Amateur)
- Cabernet Burgers (Amateur)
