This past weekend we had the pleasure of heading up Mount Veeder to watch the sun set while enjoying some amazing wine, music and food at The Hess Collection’s annual member BBQ.
Upon arrival we were greeted with two glasses of the winery’s newly released 2008 Hess Small Block Series Gewürztraminer, which provided a cool, calming start to the warm evening. As we stood in line for food, we noted some tunes coming from the live band, the Apollo Trio, and were happy to see several additional food and wine stations planted along the snaking line of people.
The food, which was prepared under the watchful eye of Executive Chef Chad Hendrickson, included some very tasty grilled mixed vegetables, mixed herb marinated chicken skewers with mushroom and fennel ragout (our favorite of the evening), an assortment of soft cheeses, nuts and dried fruit and a nicely grilled skirt steak with blue cheese and red onions.
While we had several other wines, our consensus favorite was the 2006 Hess Collection 19 Block Cuvee (meaning blend), which was just released this past May and goes for $36 per 750ml bottle. The make-up of this wine is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 10% Syrah, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. We found the bright red fruit flavors (raspberry, cherry) to be very approachable and thought the wine would pair well with a wide variety of grilled meats.
