Vineyard mustard: just for looks or does it serve a purpose?

by TrevR on February 2, 2009

Every year around this time we see a couple familiar sights in the local vineyards. First, the bright yellow mustard begins to appear between the barren rows of vines. Second, on a daily basis we see tourists wading out into the mustard, sometimes waist-deep, to snap pictures of what is truly a gorgeous sight.

With that said, today we thought we’d share a super-short, but hopefully somewhat educational, video we created about the function of vineyard mustard. Check it out and let us know what you think:

I’ve always wondered why the wild mustard. Aside from the benefits it provides for the vines, it also creates a beautiful landscape.

I am with a small winery in Texas, and would like to know the real benefit of growing wild yellow mustard in the vineyards. I have seen that it helps irrigate the soil, but what nutrients does it add? Is it really beneficial? Also, where can I get bulk Yellow Wild Mustard seed to get things started???
Thank you,
Craig

Thanks for the link. Very informative.
Next question: do you, or anyone out there, know where I can get BULK wild mustard? I have only been able to find 5 lb bags, and they're too expensive.
Anyone know a Vineyard Manager?
Thanks,
Craig
