Just about a week ago we visited The Hess Collection up on Mount Veeder to pick-up our September Rare Reds club shipment. Here’s a rundown on what we received this month:
The Hess Collection Allomi Vineyard 2006 Napa Valley Petite Sirah
At $36 per 750ml bottle, this 100% Petite Sirah is made exclusively from fruit found in the winery’s estate vineyards. Here’s how the winemaker describes it:
This Petite Sirah is characterized by a full aroma of blueberry pie, followed by ripe currant and black cherry notes. The mouth feel has a dense entry followed by polished tannins. This luscious wine finishes with a mouth full of red cherries.
The Hess Collection Small Block Series 2006 Mount Veeder Napa Valley Malbec
The staff at Hess was certainly buzzing about this wine during our visit. We must have heard from three different people about how excited they were to get their hands on this 100% Malbec. The fruit was sourced from Veeder Summit Blocks 14 and 15 and was harvested between October 18th and November 5th of ’06. Here’s how the winemaker describes this $45 per 750ml bottle of wine:
Aromas of black licorice lead to ripe loganberry. A rich, mouth-coating mid-palate of boysenberry syrup – complimented by hints of dark chocolate on the finish make this an enjoyable wine.
If we’re able to show some restraint, this one will be sitting in our cellar for a few years…
