Boston Globe offers some good tips on downtown Napa dining

Today’s Boston Globe has an article on the downtown Napa ’scene’, which just a few short years ago would have elicited all kinds of laughter and jokes about it being a ghost town. Granted, it’s far from a hustling, bustling metropolis, but there are certainly signs of life popping up all over the place.

Somewhat quietly, downtown Napa has become home to many solid dining options, a few of which we were impressed the Boston Globe came up with. In particular, we liked the recommendation of Taqueria Rosita, which the Globe says serves “…economic, if not gourmet, Mexican food…” as well as Uva Trattoria. Here’s how the Globe describes Uva:

Gazillions of old typewriters, and photos of the best of jazz, movie stars, divas, and baseball players decorate even the restrooms…Uva’s food includes Meyer lemon and rice soup with Oregon bay shrimp, a tempura-like calamari with aioli, and prosciutto-stuffed organic quail. You’ll also find live jazz and a server whose business card reads “Maître d’Harmonica.”

On a separate note, downtown Napa has also recently lost a restaurant.

As we walked along the Napa river this past weekend, we noticed the sign for Pilar was gone. Upon closer inspection, it appeared the restaurant was closed.

Sure enough, a message posted on its website says: “We are sad to announce that Pilar Restaurant is now closed permanently. We thank you for your supporting our effort. We will always remember the wonderful friendships we made here in Napa.”

While not a total surprise–when we visited and wrote our review last year we had the entire restaurant to ourselves–it is still sad.
