Napa wins dubious award

Just about every other day the Napa Valley, one of the local restaurants or wineries, is given some type of award. There are so many it’s dizzying and nearly impossible for us to keep up with them all. That said, the award (if you want to call it that) for Napa we stumbled across today is quite a dubious one.

Last week on a Yahoo! Tech blog, the “Working Guy” (aka Christopher Null), published the findings of a Federal Trade Commission study on identity theft. Seems that Napa, California made it to the very top of the list for ‘worst town’ for identity theft. Apparently between January 1st, 2007 and December 31, 2007 Napa had some 302.6 ID theft complaints per 100,000 population, which ranked #1 ahead of Madera, CA with 280.2.

While you’re busy reading the full report (warning, PDF), we’ll be running some checks on our personal information to ensure we’ve not unknowingly been the victim of some identity theft ourselves…
