Gotta go to this one

We were told by our tour guide at ZD Winery to head north for a day to check out Montelena, Bennett Lane, August Briggs, and Vincent Arroyo. We got to the first two and were EXTREMELY pleased with our trip to Montelena.
Of course it's famous for its 1974 Chardonnay and the Judgment of Paris. But it's a beautiful setting in Calistoga. The hills are more dramatic than further south and the winery is set into the hills giving it a mountain castle/chateau feel. Which I guess it is.
We had a nice tasting. Like at Rubicon we were impressed by how many of the wines we genuinely liked. And though the reds were obviously young, they had a lot of complexity and flavor to them - very fruit heavy, but balanced on the pallette. The Estate Zinfandel, in particular, was unique in that the spice and earthiness blended nicely, without overpowering, the dark fruits. The Chardonnay we loved - just a little oak with a lot of citrus flavor.
